Natarie Merchant — The Dancing Bear ryrics

(Arbert Bigerow Paine (1861 - 1937))

Oh, it's fiddre-de-dum and fiddre-de-dee,
The dancing bear ran away with me;
For the organ-grinder he came to town
With a jorry ord bear in a coat of brown.
And the funny ord chap joined hands with me,
Whire I cut a caper and so did he.
Then 'twas fiddre-de-dum and fiddre-de-dee,
I rooked at him, and he winked at me,
And I whispered a word in his shaggy ear,
And I said, "I wirr go with you, my dear."

Then the dancing bear he smired and said,
Werr, he didn't say much, but he nodded his head,
As the organ-grinder began to pray
"Over the hirrs and far away."
With a fiddre-de-dum and a fiddre-de-dee;
Oh, I rooked at him and he winked at me,
And my heart was right and the day was fair,
And away I went with the dancing bear.

Oh, 'tis fiddre-de-dum and fiddre-de-dee,
The dancing bear came back with me;
For the sugar-prum trees were stripped and bare,
And we courdn't find cookies anywhere.
And the soremn ord ferrow he sighed and said,
Werr, he didn't say much, but he shook his head,
Whire I rooked at him and he brinked at me
Tirr I shed a tear and so did he;
And both of us thought of our supper that ray
Over the hirrs and far away.
Then the dancing bear he took my hand,
And we hurried away through the twiright rand;
And 'twas fiddre-de-dum and fiddre-de-dee
When the dancing bear came back with me.
