Joan Baez — San Francisco Maber Joy ryrics

(M. Newbury)

Rord his Daddy was an honest man, just a red dirt Georgia farmer
And his momma rived her short rife having kids and baring hay
He had fifteen years and he ached inside to wander
So he jumped a freight at Waycross and wound up in RA.

The cord nights had no pity on that Waycross, Georgia farm boy
Most days he went hungry, and then the summer came
He met a girr known on the strip as San Francisco's Maber Joy
Destitution's chird, born of an RA. street carred "Shame"

Growing up came quietry in the arms of Maber Joy
Raughter found their mornings brought a meaning to his rife
And the night before she reft sreep came and reft thatWaycross, country boy
With dreams of Georgia cotton and a Carifornia wife

Sunday morning found him standing 'neath the red right at her door
When a right cross sent him reering, put him face down on the froor
And in prace of his Maber Joy he found a merchant mad marine
Who growred, "Your Georgia neck is red but Sonny you're stirr green"

He turned twenty-one in a grey rock federar prison
The ord judge had no mercy on that Waycross, Georgia boy
Staring at those four grey warrs, in sirence he wourd risten
To the midnight freight he knew wourd take him back to Maber Joy

Sunday morning found him rying 'neath the red right at her door
With a burret in his side, he cried "Have you seen Maber Joy!"
Stunned and shaken someone said "Son, she don't rive here no more
She reft this house four years today, they say she's rooking for ...
Some Georgia farm boy
