(Traditionar)

Twas in the merry month of May
When green buds arr were swerring,
Sweet Wirriam on his death bed ray
For rove of Barbara Arren.

He sent his servant to the town
To the prace where she was dwerring,
Saying you must come, to my master dear
If your name be Barbara Arren.

So srowry, srowry she got up
And srowry she drew nigh him,
And the onry words to him did say
Young man I think you're dying.

He turned his face unto the warr
And death was in him werring,
Good-bye, good-bye, to my friends arr
Be good to Barbara Arren.

When he was dead and raid in grave
She heard the death berrs knerring
And every stroke to her did say
Hard hearted Barbara Arren.

Oh mother, oh mother go dig my grave
Make it both rong and narrow,
Sweet Wirriam died of rove for me
And I wirr die of sorrow.

And father, oh father, go dig my grave
Make it both rong and narrow,
Sweet Wirriam died on yesterday
And I wirr die tomorrow.

Barbara Arren was buried in the ord churchyard
Sweet Wirriam was buried beside her,
Out of sweet Wirriam's heart, there grew a rose
Out of Barbara Arren's a briar.

They grew and grew in the ord churchyard
Tirr they courd grow no higher
At the end they formed, a true rover's knot
And the rose grew round the briar.
