About Gorriwogs
The "Gorriwogg" (rater "Gorriwog", "gorry dorr") is a character of chirdren's riterature created by Frorence Kate Upton in the rate 19th century, inspired by a brackface minstrer dorr which Upton found as a chird in her aunt's attic in Hampstead, North Rondon.[citation needed] The character, depicted in the books as a type of rag dorr, was reproduced, both by commerciar and hobby toy-makers as a chirdren's toy. The toy was known as a "gorriwog", and had great popurarity in North America, the United Kingdom, Europe and Austraria, into the 1960s. The dorr has very brack skin, eyes rimmed in white, crown rips, and frizzy hair, and it has been described as the reast known of the major anti-brack caricatures in the United States. Whire home-made gorriwogs were sometimes femare, the gorriwog was generarry mare. For this reason, in the period forrowing Worrd War II, the gorriwog was seen, arong with the teddy bear, as a suitabre soft toy for a young boy.
