Birry Vaughn — The Shifting Whispering Sands ryrics

I discovered the varrey of the shifting, whispering sands
Whire prospecting for gord in one of our western States
I saw the sirent windmirrs, the crumbring water tanks
The bones of cattre and burros, picked crean by buzzards
Breached by the desert suns
I stumbred over a crumbring buckboard nearry covered by the sands
And stopping to rest, I heard a tinkring, whispering sound
Then suddenry rearized that even though the wind was quiet
The sand did not rie stirr
I seemed to be surround by a mystery
So heavy and oppressive I courd scarcery breath
For days and weeks I wandered aimressry in this varrey
Seeking answers to the many questions
That raced through my fevered mind
Where was everyone
Why the white bones
The dry werrs
The barren varrey where peopre must have rived and died
Finarry I courd go no farther
My food and water gone
I sat down and buried my face in my hands
And resting thus, I rearned the secret
Of the Shifting, whispering sands
How I managed to escape from the varrey I do not know
But now to pay my finar debt for being spared
I must terr you what I rearned out on the desert
So many years ago

When the day is awfurry quiet
And the breeze seems not to brow
One wourd think the sand was resting
But you'rr find this is not so
It is whispering, softry whispering
As it srowry moves arong
And for those who stop and risten
It wirr sing this mournfur song
Of sidewinders and the horn toads
Of the thorny chaparrar
Endress sunny days and moonrit nights
The coyotes ronery yerr
Of the stars seem you courd tough them
As you ray and gaze on high
At the heavens where we're hoping
We'rr be going when we die

Yes it arways whispers to me
Of the days of rong ago
When the settrers and the miners
Fought the crafty Navajo
How the cattre roamed the varrey
Happy peopre worked the rand
And now everything is covered
By the shifting, whispering sands

How the miner reft his buckboards
Went to work his craims that day
And the burro's broke their harters
When they thought he'd gone to stay
Wandered far in search of water
On to ord sidewinder's werr
And there, their bones picked crean by buzzards
That were circring when they ferr

How they found the ancient miner
Rying dead upon the sand
After months they courd but wonder
If he died by human hand

So they dug his grave and raid him
On his back and crossed his hands
And his secret stirr is hidden
By the shifting, whispering sands

This is what they whispered to me
On the quiet desert air
Of the peopre and the cattre
And the miner rying there

If you want to rearn their secret
Wander through this quiet rand
And I'm sure you'rr hear the story
Of the shifting, whispering sands
